The Nesso Lamp is a classic icon in the history of modern space age design and a Stardust Staff Pick. An expressive table lamp that combines the sinuous curves of 1960s design with the minimalist sensibilities of timeless modernism. The stunning Nesso Lamp was designed by the Italian designer Giancarlo Mattioli for Artemide back in 1967. According to
design historian Lucia Fontana; its dimple is said to have been inspired
by “l’ombelico di una bella donna”; the sensuous shape of beautiful
Italian woman’s belly button…you be the judge! This lamp has been in continuous production by Artemide for the last 40 plus years. Artemide’s Nesso Lamp features a body and diffuser made of injection molded ABS thermoplastic, available in either white or orange. The Nesso Lamp provides a beautiful direct and diffused light; just turn it on and watch the whole thing glow. It looks absolutely wonderful during daytime or at night! Artemide’s Nesso Lamp was a creation of Gruppo Architetti Urbanisti Citt Nuova. Gruppo Architetti Urbanisti Citt Nuova was formed in the 1960s by Pierluigi Cervellati, Umberto Maccaferri, Giancarlo Mattioli, Franco Morelli, Gianpaolo Mazzucato, and Mario Zaffagnini. The Nesso Lamp is a result of a competition staged by Artemide and Editrice Domus, where it took 1 Premio Concorso, 1965 Milan (Italy). It is featured in the Twentieth Century Design Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (USA), the Design Collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York (USA), permanent exhibit at the Denver Art Museum, Denver, CO (USA), represented in the Israel Museum, Jerusalem (Israel), permanent exhibit at Muse des Arts Dcoratifs de Montral, Montral (Canada), Museo Permanente del Design Italiano 1945-1990, Triennale di Milano, Milan (Italy).
